On November 3, 2025, a roundtable discussion on “Environmental Policy in the Kyrgyz Republic: Modern Approaches to Solving Environmental Problems by Local Governments” was held at the International University of Kyrgyzstan. It was organized by the ARPC “IUK and the Hanns Seidel Stiftung in Central Asia.
Welcoming remarks were made by M.S. Baikhodzhoev, Vice President of the International University of Kyrgyzstan and Vice Rector for International Relations and Science; Konstantin Zelenty, Deputy Ambassador of Germany to the Kyrgyz Republic; and Konstantin Blaschke, Head of the Physics and Chemistry Department in Central Asia.
The aim of the roundtable was to discuss modern approaches to implementing environmental policy at the local level, exchange experiences, and identify effective mechanisms for solving environmental problems in the regions.
The event brought together representatives of the Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Bishkek City Hall, tourism companies, and academic experts from the ARPC “IUK” and the K. Karasaev Bishkek State University. During the discussions, participants examined issues of rational use of natural resources, the implementation of green technologies, waste management, water and land conservation, as well as the importance of environmental education and eco-awareness, and citizen engagement in decision-making processes.
Particular attention was paid to strengthening the role of local governments in implementing environmental policy at the national and local levels, including implementation tools, monitoring, and public engagement.
The roundtable resulted in recommendations and proposals aimed at improving Kyrgyzstan’s environmental policy and strengthening partnerships between municipalities and the public, the academic community, and businesses in promoting sustainable development and environmental protection initiatives.
Participants noted the importance of holding such events regularly to establish a unified platform for cooperation in environmental policy.
